Biography

Martin Borggrefe is Professor of Cardiology and the Director of the Department of Cardiology, I. University Hospital Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Dr Borggrefe received his medical degree at the University of Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1980. From 1988-1988 he had a fellowship at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Düsseldorf, and from 1989-2000 he was an Assistant Professor and the Director of Electrophysiology at the Department of Internal Medicine, University Münster, Germany. From 2000-2001 he was the Director of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology, II. University Hospital Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, Germany, and in April 2001 he received his current position as the Director of the Department of Cardiology, I. University Hospital Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Dr Borggrefe’s research interests focus on diagnostics and therapy of cardiac arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, the clinical manifestation of atherosclerosis, and mechanisms, diagnostics and therapy of cardiac insufficiency and heart failures.

Trials for which Dr Borggrefe is, or has been, principal investigator include the SHock Inhibition Evaluation with Azimilide (SHIELD) study, the European Powerheart study, and the Ventricular Arrhythmias Dofetilide study. Dr Borggrefe is a member of the Study Group on the Molecular Basis of Arrhythmias of the European Society of Cardiology and of the Steering Committee of the Unexplained Cardiac Arrest Registry of Europe (UCARE). He is an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. He was awarded with Fritz-Acker Prize of the German Society of Cardiology, and the Hannelore Stübler Prize of the Society of Cardiovascular System Research Essen in 2002

Dr Borggrefe’s publications include over 350 papers and abstracts on cardiovascular disease in journals such as Heart Rhythm, Circulation, the American Journal of Cardiology, Heart, the European Heart Journal, Lancet, the American Heart Journal, Cardiovascular Research, Cerebrovascular Diseases, Nature, and the British Heart Journal. Dr Borggrefe has contributed to several books about the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease.
