Biography

Hans-Christoph Diener is a Professor of Neurology and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, the Co-chair of the Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (NETZ) and the Director of the Headache Centre.

Dr Diener's special research interests are in stroke, headache and cerebellar physiology.

Dr Diener received his medical degree and doctorate at the Albrecht-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, and continued his training there in the Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine and Surgery. Prior to joining the University of Essen, he was an associate professor of neurology at the Department of Neurology at the University of Tuebingen. He was a visiting professor at the Neurological Sciences Institute in Portland, Oregon in 1984 and 1985, and at the University of New South Wales in Sydney in 1987 and 1988.

The first acute stroke unit in Germany was set up by Dr Diener in 1995, and he has been the principal investigator of major trials in the acute therapy and prevention of stroke. Dr Diener is responsible for the multicentre German stroke data bank.

Dr Diener was the president of the German Neurological Society (2003–2004). He is currently a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Stroke Association of the AHA, the European Stroke Society, the Headache Research Group of the World Federation of Neurology, the German Migraine Society, and several committees of the International Headache Society.

Dr Diener has authored or co-authored 389 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Lancet, the New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, Lancet Neurology, Cephalalgia, Pain, Cerebrovascular Diseases, Brain, and Stroke, 120 invited reviews, and 221 book chapters, and is the editor or single author of 54 books. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of Stroke, Cerebrovascular Diseases, Aktuelle Neurologie, Lancet Neurology, Arzneimitteltherapie, the International Journal of Clinical Practice, Cephalalgia, European Neurology, and Reviews in Contemporary Pharmacotherapy.
