Angel Chamorro has been actively involved in developing programs joining both clinical research and the management of patients with ischaemic stroke at the Hospital Clinic of the University of Barcelona, Spain, where he is Founder and Head of the Stroke Unit of the Department of Neurosciences.

Dr Chamorro’s main research and clinical interests are acute stroke management, antithrombotic treatment of acute ischaemic stroke, oral anticoagulation in the secondary prevention of stroke, early heparin therapy in cerebral ischaemic infarction, cerebral haemorrhage early after carotid stenting and motor behaviour in stroke patients.

Dr Chamorro received his medical degree from the University of Valladolid, his degree of neurologist from the University Complutense of Madrid, and his degree of Doctor in Medicine from the University of Barcelona.

Dr Chamorro is chairman of the Rapid Antioagulation Prevents Ischaemic Study (RAPID), a multinational academic trial assessing the value of early high-dose adjusted unfractionated heparin in ischaemic stroke. He is an investigator in the European-Australian Fiblast (Trafermin) in Acute Stroke Group. He is a clinical fellow of the Neurological Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York and member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Neurology. He is a member of the EUSI Executive Committee.

Dr Chamorro has authored more than 90 original articles in the areas of anatomoclinical correlation in stroke, genetic risk factors, haemodynamics, anticoagulation, and outcome prediction, among others in journals such as Stroke, Lancet, Cerebrovascular Diseases, the Journal of Neurological Sciences, and the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow Metabolism.
