Biography

Joan Montaner is currently the Head of the Neurovascular Research Laboratory, Stroke Unit, Vall d'Hebron Hospital, Barcelona, Spain.

Dr Montaner clinical and research interests focus on thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke and thrombolysis-related haemorrhagic infarctions. He is especially interested in diagnostics for thrombolytic therapy, haemorrhagic transformation after cardioembolic stroke, biochemical diagnosis of acute stroke using a panel of plasma biomarkers, and in plasma thrombin-activatable fibrinolytic inhibitor (TAFI) among healthy subjects and patients with vascular diseases.

Dr Montaner is a principle investigator in the CLOTBUST (Combined Lysis Of Thrombus in Brain ischemia using transcranial Ultrasound and Systemic TPA) trial.

Dr Montaner has contributed more than 60 scientific journal articles to leading peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Stroke, Neurology, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Neurosurgery, Circulation, the European Journal of Neurology, and the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow Metabolism.
