Biography

Nils Gunnar Wahlgren is Associate Professor of Neurology at the Karolinska Institute, Head of the Division of Acute Neurology and Cerebrovascular Diseases and Chief of the Cerebrovascular Research Unit in the Department of Neurology at the Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr Wahlgren's research activities are focused on thrombolysis in stroke, neuroprotective therapy and epidemiological studies.

Dr Wahlgren is coordinating registries for carotid surgery and for thrombolysis in stroke patients. Dr Wahlgren is Chairman and Director for the SITS (Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis in Stroke) international network, secretary of the Executive Committee of the European Stroke Council and member of the Programme Committee of the European Stroke Council. He is chairman for the Karolinska Stroke Update meetings, a consensus meeting for acute stroke therapy and stroke prevention. He is also a member of the EUSI Writing Group and the principle investigator in the Clomethiazole Acute Stroke Study (CLASS).

Dr Wahlgren has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications on cerebrovascular diseases in journals such as Stroke, Cerebrovascular Diseases, Cephalalgia, the Journal of Neurological Sciences, and Neurology.
